Our indigo friend doesn’t get a good wrap from environmental activists and eco-warriors alike. The popular wardrobe item is renowned for its detrimental manufacturing procedures that have a costly impact on our environment and planet.
According to Vice, ‘the production of one pair of denim jeans can use up to 2,000 gallons of water, enough to fill 20 bathtubs. About half that amount is used to grow the cotton’. It’s a lot when you also consider that 1.7 million Australians will purchase a pair of denim jeans in any given four week period (according to a Roy Morgan study). Add to that the dye runoff, the water usage per wash by consumers and the landfill, and there’s no doubt there is a real problem in the industry.
